Professional and Academic Career
Margreeth Chr. [Margaretha Christina] de Jong graduated from the Rotterdam Conservatory (1986) with Diplomas in Church Music (including Organ Improvisation), Music Pedagogy Organ, and Organ Solo Performance, obtaining a 10 -- the highest possible mark in the Netherlands.
On the basis of this very exceptional achievement, the Dutch Ministry of Welfare, Health, and Cultural Affairs awarded her trice with a grant for further special study abroad. De Jong specialized with Guy Bovet in Switzerland, and with Jean Langlais and Marie-Louise Jaquet-Langlais at the famous Schola Cantorum in Paris, France, where she earned the Prix de Virtuosité in 1988, again with highest distinction (“avec la mention Maximum”).
She won a First Prize at the International UFAM-Organ Competition (‘degré honneur’) in Paris, France, and another First prize at the International César-Franck-Competition in Haarlem, the Netherlands.
In 1994, she was awarded with the silver medallion by the Société Académique “Arts - Sciences - Lettres” in Paris in recognition of her contributions to French organ culture.
Margreeth Chr. de Jong is music director/organist of the (Protestant) Nieuwe Kerk in Middelburg. She has performed for highly esteemed guests and dignitaries, such as the Queen of the Netherlands, Nelson Mandela, and Desmond Tutu.
As a concert organist, she has given numerous solo recitals in Western Europe. Her concerts in foreign countries were programmed in major concert series and include recitals in Ingolstadt (Liebfraumünster), Mannheim (Christuskirche), Munich (St. Markuskirche), Xanten (Domkirche), Gladbeck (St. Lamberti), Eisenach (Stadtkirche), Altenburg (Schloßkirche) and further international series in e.g. Moers, Essen, Hamburg, Kiel, and Bonn (Germany); Pecs (Hungary); Paris (La Chapelle St-Louis de la Salpêtrère), Mulhouse (Temple St.-Jean), St.-Remy-en-Provence (France); Brussels, Gent, Antwerp (Cathedral; St. Josepskerk; St. Joriskerk), Brugge (Belgium); Basle (St. Leonhard, Pauluskirche, Münster), St. Gallen (Stiftkirche; St. Laurenzen) Bern, and Zurich (Switzerland). She also made a number of radio, television, and CD recordings (see below).
As a teacher, she has tutored a circle of students from the Netherlands and abroad. She has also given lectures/workshops to associations of organists. As a composer, a number of her pieces have been published and recorded. Among her compositions for choir and organ are Psaume 42 pour Choeur et Orgue (1997), a large-scale work which has also been recorded on CD, and Psalm 23 (English text; 2001 – for an audio sample, see below). Inspired by the ideas of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, she wrote a composition for choir entitled “Vrijheid” (“Freedom”).
